The Sego Lily Center for the Abused Deaf (SLCAD) is still a fairly new
non-profit agency that began in April of 2000. The agency is run by a group of concerned
people (Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hearing).
Several people have had specialized training to work as advocates for
Deaf/HH victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The training was provided by a
model agency in Seattle, WA, called Abused Deaf Womens Advocacy Service (ADWAS).
Their website is www.adwas.org. ADWAS, along with
the Department of Justice developed a grant, Justice for Deaf Victims, in order to help
Deaf/HH/Deaf-Blind victims in other cities across the United States to receive appropriate
advocate services.
Who We Are
The Sego Lily Center for the Abused Deaf (SLCAD) is an advocacy agency designed to meet
the specific needs of Deaf, Deaf/Blind and Hard of Hearing victims of domestic violence
and sexual assault. It is modeled after the Abused Deaf Womens Advocacy Services
(ADWAS) from Seattle, Washington. A few years ago, ADWAS received a grant from the
Department of Justice to train several agencies across the nation to serve the specific
needs of this population in a culturally sensitive manner. SLCAD is one of those agencies.
SLCAD's philosophy:
- We oppose the use of violence as a means of control over others.
- We believe every person has a right to live in a non-violent environment.
- SLCAD does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, national origin, age,
sexual orientation, class, and mental, physical or sensory disability.
