| Advocacy |
Provides domestic violence and sexual assault
advocacy for Deaf/Hard of Hearing (HoH) victims. Advocates are extensively trained to
assist, advocate for and empower these victims. All advocates use American Sign Language
(ASL) and are familiar with the range of language needs of this population. Advocates also
provide peer counseling and make referrals as needed to a wide variety of services. |
Accommodation Support |
ADA hotel kits are available to the shelters on a loan basis. Kits contain a portable TTY,
telephone amplifier, vibrating alarm clock, flashing door-knocker and a flashing smoke
alarm. The kits are designed to provide ADA accommodation and can be lent to shelters that
house Deaf/HoH victims. |
Referral |
SLCAD offers a wide variety of referrals to agencies such as ADA accommodated shelters,
medical, legal, counseling, social services and interpreting services (SLCAD is not an
interpreting agency, but can help arrange services and more). |
Education/Consulting |
SLCAD is developing parenting, relationship, self-defense, and anger management classes
especially designed for the Deaf/HoH. See website for details. Offers free consultation
and presentations to educate any agencies that support victims of domestic violence and
sexual assault who want to learn how to better serve the Deaf/HoH victims. |
